While Ungerer & Company officially opened its doors in 1893, its birth was actually much earlier. William P. Ungerer, having spent over twenty years training as a perfumer in France, planted the seed from which Ungerer & Company would flourish. Ungerer was one of the first businesses of its kind in the United States.

amer_perfumer_cover.jpg Joining his father's business, William G. founded, edited and published The American Perfumer, a forerunner to today's Cosmetics and Toiletries. In 1907, William G. assumed the role of president. While simultaneously growing the company, William G. organized a sizable fund supporting the allied forces in World War I and established the "Ungerer Fund" to benefit war orphans in Grasse, France.

In 1930, Frederick H. purchased Budd Aromatics and J.N. Hickok & Sons flavorers, propelling the company forward into the arts of perfumery and flavorings. This new growth demanded the creation of a new, more extensive product line and sales force and the addition of a new basic materials production and distribution facility. His leadership enabled the company to successfully continue through the Great Depression and World War II.

kenneth_g_voorhees.jpg In 1949, Frederick's son-in-law Kenneth G. Voorhees, assumed the presidency. In an era dominated by strong entrepreneurial names, such as Cole, Lueders, Leonhardt, Magnus and Van Ameringen, Kenneth G. Voorhees, Sr. was considered one of the premiere traders and marketers of quality essential oils of his time. Kenneth G. developed and promoted the raw material and essential oil branch of the company, transforming it into a pivotal segment of the product line.

In 1957, K.G. Voorhees Jr. joined the company and succeeded his father as president in 1977. The company, growing at a rapid pace, relocated its New York City headquarters to Lincoln Park, New Jersey. In 1989, Ungerer & Company continued corporate expansion with the building of a new plant in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Foresight has allowed the firm to aggressively market flavors, fragrances, essential oils and aroma chemicals without sacrificing the over a century-old commitment to total customer satisfaction and service.
